About Dr Abrahams
Dr Abrahams is a Physician and Rheumatologist practising at Melomed, Gatesville.
Dr Abrahams completed his MBChB at the University Of Cape Town in 1999. In 2009, he completed his fellowship at the College of Physicians of South Africa: FCP(SA). In 2014, he also obtained a Certificate in Rheumatology.
He began his medical career as an Intern at Addington Hospital in Durban, where he rotated between General Medicine, General surgery, and OBS and Gynae. In 2001, he worked as a Community Service Medical Officer, where he provided primary health care for general outpatients and a 24-hour trauma centre. Here, he specialised in Diabetes and Hypertension clinics as well as paediatric clinics.
Dr Abrahams also has international work experience, having worked as a Senior House Officer Locum at a London Hospital for 2 years. The experience exposed him to a different population, consisting mainly of elderly people. In London, he also learned more about orthopaedics, especially manipulating fractures and regional anaesthetics.

In addition to running his Melomed practice, Dr Abrahams also runs a Rheumatology outreach clinic in Gugulethu every two months. Here, he sees patients and teaches Primary care doctors aspects of joint examination and Intra-articular injection techniques.
Dr Abrahams has also conducted many clinical presentations, including topics at the GP Refresher course and clinical cases at the SARAA meeting. He also presented clinical cases at the combined SARAA Leeds Symposium.
Dr Abrahams is also affiliated with the Stellenbosch medical school and lectures medical students in Rheumatology and internal medicine during their 5th year. His research interests include SLE and TB; he has presented papers for these topics at national and international meetings.
As both a Physician and Rheumatologist, he has a keen interest in musculoskeletal and autoimmune conditions. He treats a variety of these kinds of diseases, including Gout, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Osteoarthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Lupus, Systemic Sclerosis, Inflammatory Myopathies, Systemic Vasculitis. He also has an interest in diseases that contribute to these conditions, such as Diabetes, Hypertension and HIV.
Dr Abrahams takes a professional and friendly approach to treating his patients. His passion lies not only in treating illnesses, but also in guiding patients through lifestyle changes that will ensure that their health and well-being are at their most optimal.
